The Truth about Bedding & Thread Count: Does it Matter?

When you shop for new sheets, there are a number of things to consider before buying. Begin by asking questions so you can choose which sheets suit you best. Do you want something breathable, perfect for summer? Do you prefer a specific fabric? Are you looking for a specific weave style?
Most of the time, shoppers look at the thread count. However, there is a misconception that thread count reflects the quality of a bed sheet. While it matters, it should not be the only factor to consider if you’re looking for comfortable bed sheets. Read on and learn how to find comfy sheets, what thread count means, and why it matters, plus what to look for when you want to buy high-quality bedding to match your high-quality mattress.

What is Thread Count Exactly?

Thread count is one of the most common terms you will hear and read about if you are in the market for new sheets. Generally, thread count refers to how many threads run through a square inch of material. In theory, this is easy to understand. However, the reality of it is a little more complex.

How is the Thread Count Determined?

The way it works is that manufacturers count the warp threads (vertical strands) and the weft threads (horizontal strands) of the fabric and add them together. This creates the thread count of a certain product. While many are under the impression that a higher thread count means better quality and a softer texture, that is not always the case. You have to consider the fact that not all cotton is created equal.

So, if you want sheets that are soft and breathable, look at the factors that significantly affect the quality of any fabric (such as cotton). Some of these factors are length, fiber strength, durability, and color.

How Do You Know the Bed Sheets are of Superior Quality Then?

The quality of bed sheets comes down to what they are made from. Think of it this way: linens made from cotton have more breathability than polyester fabrics, even if they have the same thread count. Softness also relies on the type of yarn used. Sheets with a higher thread count are made with finer (or thinner) yarns. Therefore, just using thread count as a basis for quality is not enough.

Wait, So Does Thread Count Really Matter?

Yes, thread count matters, but it should not be the only factor to consider if you want soft sheets. Remember: a high thread count does not automatically mean better quality. So instead of just looking at a sheet’s thread count, you should definitely pay attention to the type of fabric used.

What Thread Count Should You Choose?

Many good-quality sheets have thread counts of between 200 and 800. Now, assuming that you are looking at bed linen made from good quality cotton, approach it this way: Anything less than 200 means that the fabric was loosely woven together, so they’re rough to touch, easy to rip, and usually prone to developing holes easily.
On the other hand, you should be careful of products with high thread counts. Usually, products with inflated thread counts feel stiff to the touch and therefore are not very comfortable to sleep on. Experts also say that it’s best to go for plain colored sheets instead of printed ones because when manufacturers invest in a higher thread count, they usually avoid covering up that texture with another layer that affects the fabric’s natural softness.

Invest in Your Bedding

When shopping for new sheets, don’t agonize over thread counts; ask about the quality of cotton instead–there’s a reason cotton has been used for thousands of years!

Fun fact: Egyptian cotton is some of the best material available that offers the most luxurious feeling for your bedding. And yes, they’re available worldwide.
